France has its own Carte Bancaire (CB) interbank network, distinct from the global Visa and Mastercard networks. The majority of French bank cards bear the CB logo because they are issued by one of the banks in Groupement des Cartes Bancaires (Bank Card Group). To operate abroad, the CB card must be associated with another network such as Visa or MasterCard, so that transaction can be processed on international network. In 2016 Carte Bancaire had 66.5 million cards in circulation.
