Payment product ID: 148

Card Payments is a general term used to cover all transactions made with a debit, a credit or an ATM card.
Over the last 30 years, card payments have become an integral part of the payments landscape in both cardholder present (point of sale) and card not present (MOTO/Ecommerce) environments.

Millions of cards are issued through banks and other financial institutions who are members of one of the card schemes Visa, MasterCard or American Express or by Banks that operate a proprietary card scheme such as Discover, Diners, and JCB, etc.

Transactions are acquired by member banks that are licensed to do so.

Worldline maintains relationships and connections with a number of acquiring banks whose services they utilize for the processing of card transactions.

As a Payment Service Provider, Worldline accepts credit card payment on behalf of its merchants.
These payment requests are registered and dispatched to the acquiring banks that are part of its network as an authorization request message.
The acquiring banks send the requests to the issuing banks who respond with an authorization approval or an authorization decline and this response is returned to us. We return an approval or a rejection response to the merchant.
We can submit a settlement request for the approved transactions automatically or at the request of merchant.

Credit cards are a form of card payment where the card issuer extends a line of credit to the cardholder which can be used to purchase goods or services. The main variations are:

  • Charge card - a charge card works in the same way as a credit card but requires the balance to be paid in full each month
  • Credit cards extend a continuing line of debt, subject to interest being charged
  • Debit card which can be used like currency by the owner of the card and is linked directly to the cardholder’s bank account
  • Prepaid cash card/gift card which can be loaded with a positive balance and used like currency until the balance is depleted (*not all cards are reloadable)

Debit cards physically, looks like a credit card. Funds are withdrawn directly from either the cardholder's bank account (often referred to as a check card). However, for merchants, many debit cards are processed exactly the same as a credit card.
Debit cards often are co-branded, enabling consumers to use them globally. There are many other types of debit card, each accepted regionally or nationally. For example the following are national debit brands: Maestro, Visa Electron and Carte Bleue in France.
