What is smart routing?

Smart routing is a payment optimization system that automatically directs transactions to the most suitable card acquirer. This technology uses dynamic rules and live analysis to achieve two primary goals: maximizing transaction approval rates and minimizing processing fees.

The system makes intelligent acquirer selections by analyzing multiple factors: transaction characteristics, acquirer performance metrics, compliance requirements, campaign rules.

Key benefits

  • Higher approval rates and lower processing costs
  • Improved payment success rates
  • Enhanced customer experience through seamless processing
  • Reduced operational overhead

Supported routing criteria and features

  • BIN/issuer country
  • Currency
  • Transaction amount
  • Payment product
  • Card scheme
  • Transaction volume split
  • Acquirer features
  • AI/machine learning model
  • More features will be added

The routing rules can be configured on your merchant ID or platform level.

How does it work?

By matching each transaction with the most appropriate acquirer, you can achieve better financial outcomes while providing consumers with seamless payment processing. This routing optimization happens automatically in real-time, requiring no intervention after initial setup and configuration.

  1. The consumer places an order on your website.
  2. You send over the payment request to us either with Connect API or using MyCheckout hosted payment pages.
  3. The transaction request is sent to the Worldline platform for processing.
  4. Worldline's platform checks if Smart Routing is enabled for you and invokes the Smart Routing engine to determine the optimal transaction routing path.
  5. The Smart Routing engine evaluates the transaction based on predefined criteria.
  6. Based on the evaluation, the most relevant acquirer is selected as the preferred primary acquirer and the rest are reserved as the backup/secondary acquirers.
  7. Confirmation of the selected acquirer is returned to the routing criteria module.
  8. Routing criteria returns the acquirer selection outcome back to the Smart Routing engine.
  9. Smart Routing engine communicates the selected acquirer information back to the Worldline platform.
  10. The Worldline platform forwards the transaction request to the selected card acquirer.
  11. The card acquirer sends the request to the card issuer for transaction authorization.
  12. The card issuer authorizes the transaction and returns the approval or denial response.
