Emerging standards for agentic commerce 

Several industry-led initiatives are shaping how AI agents interact with commerce and payment systems:

    • Agents Payment Protocol (AP2): An open, shared protocol initiated led by Google that provides a secure framework to prove user authorization for transactions initiated by AI agents. 
    • Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP): A standard from OpenAI and that defines the technical communication between an AI agent and your commerce systems during a purchase.

    Alongside these efforts, major card networks are extending their infrastructure to support agentic commerce:

    • Visa – Trusted Agent Protocol extends Visa’s tokenization and identity infrastructure to AI agents, with a focus on agent verification and intent validation. Tools such as the Acceptance Agent Toolkit help merchants connect to this ecosystem.
    • Mastercard - Agent Pay Program enables AI Agents to securely initiate and complete transactions using Mastercard’s technologies, including network tokenization, modern authentication such as Passkeys, and fraud and cybersecurity.
