Overview

Payment group: Real-time banking
Payment product ID: 8596

South Korean payment market adopted a different payer authentication method. The card companies require South Korean cardholders to go through a proprietary payer authentication process: to complete a payment, consumers must authenticate themselves in the card issuer's banking app with a banking password and username or Touch/Face ID.

There is almost no chance of having fraud-related chargebacks when using authenticated payments. The exception to this rule is friendly fraud – when a consumer makes the online purchase, receives the order, but later falsely claims they didn't receive/authorize the purchase to get the money back.

Check out the Samsung Card product for the Cards (debit & credit) payments.

Authenticating yourself using someone else's card is systematically difficult. If somebody successfully did that and paid anyway, they gain access the following cardholder credentials:

  • smartphone PIN/fingerprint
  • mobile card app access (PIN/fingerprint)
  • in-app payment (the app usually asks you for a PIN or your fingerprint to confirm the payment)

Visa or Mastercard don't operate in domestic card transactions, only cross-border ones.
